The Fabric of the Soul and the Light of the Feather... Roya Rastegarsani’s Journey in Redrawing Heritage with a Contemporary Spirit

From the heart of her studio, filled with light and tranquility in the Canadian city of Vancouver, the Iranian artist and academic, Dr. Roya Rastegarsani, reformulates the concept of fine art through an extraordinary tale of human creativity. She does not merely place oil paints on canvas; rather, with her brush, she weaves a fabric combining the authenticity of Persian heritage with contemporary visual expression, turning each painting under her hands into a temporal and cultural bridge that crosses oceans, connecting identity, memory, and aspirations for the future.

The story of Dr. Roya Rastegarsani is not merely a tale of an artist who succeeded in exhibiting her paintings in international galleries, but rather a rare human and intellectual epic that combines the rigor of analytical and managerial thought, the delicate sense of transparent emotion, and the authenticity of Iranian cultural heritage.

Roya grew up in an Iranian environment rich in visual and historical beauty. From her early childhood, her eyes closely scrutinized the fine details surrounding her: hand-woven Persian carpets adorned with stories, shimmering mosaics decorating the ceilings of classical mosques and palaces, and the earthy and azure colors telling tales of bygone centuries. For Roya, art was not just a plastic medium or a recreational activity, but a secret language through which she understood the world and explored the concepts of identity, memory, and existence.

This burning passion for painting and colors did not isolate her from another great passion for analysis, logic, and strategic thinking. Roya possessed an exceptional balance between creative inspiration and organized analytical thought, which led her to pursue a unique academic path; she began her journey by obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. Her scientific ambition did not stop there; she continued her passionate journey to sail into the world of leadership and management, earning a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA), and crowned this triumphant journey by obtaining a Doctorate of Business Administration (DBA) in Executive Management.

This exceptional blend of digital engineering and strategic management did not distance her from art; instead, it provided her with a cohesive intellectual methodology and a deep vision that later enabled her to manage her creative and academic career in a professional and global manner.

In parallel with her rigorous academic studies, Roya spent long, continuous hours in the studios of master fine artists in Iran. There, she learned the rules of art from its authentic sources, training under distinguished artists who mastered the secrets of Realism and the miraculous details of Hyperrealism.

Roya delved deep into the art of miniature (historical Persian miniatures) and learned how to control the finest hairs on the paintbrush, and how to mix oil colors to give the impression of texture, depth, and light. She mastered classical painting techniques that required the patience of Job and extreme precision, which gave her oil paintings a tactile and highly distinctive character; at first glance, the viewer feels as if they can touch the texture of the carpets or the protrusions of the wall stones in the painting.

As her personal style crystallized, women became the central focus of Roya's works. Women were not presented as a superficial symbol of beauty, but as a vital element brimming with resilience, memory, and hope. In her paintings, the features of contemporary women intertwine with symbols of Persian heritage to pose profound questions: How do we preserve our identity in a world leaning toward globalization? And how does a woman evolve to become a bridge connecting the nobility of the past with the ambition of the future?

For Roya, a painting was never just a canvas filled with colors placed in a gilded frame to decorate the walls of exhibitions and galleries. Rather, she always believed that visual arts possess an immense healing and human energy capable of penetrating the deepest depths of the human soul.

This firm belief led her to dedicate a significant portion of her time and scientific research to the field of "Art Therapy." Roya directed her academic and research efforts toward studying the positive impact of visual arts in supporting children suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Through her field research, she was able to transform drawing lines and colors into a non-verbal linguistic communication tool, opening those closed windows for these children to express their feelings, release their energy, and build bridges of trust with the outside world. Roya proved that the paintbrush can sometimes be more eloquent than words, and that color is capable of healing psychological wounds and making a real difference in the lives of children and their families.

Roya's journey, rich with giving, culminated in her move to Canada, where she continued to inspire others and pass on her broad expertise to new generations. Roya currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Prosperity College of Canada in Vancouver.

From this prestigious leadership position, Roya does not merely manage the department; she works as a mentor and professor seeking to develop innovative educational curricula that combine the precision of classical techniques with contemporary creative freedom, enhancing the role of art as a tool for critical thinking and cultural expression.

This inspiring journey was not devoid of extraordinary international recognition and appreciation; she was selected among the top 13 women in Iran in recognition of her influential creative and intellectual contributions. She also had the honor of delivering a keynote address as the first main speaker at the international TEDx Omid conference in Iran, where she shared her vision on the intersection of art, identity, and human will before thousands of followers.

In appreciation of her unique artistic excellence and her dazzling visual language that transcended cultural boundaries, Roya received the Golden Visa from the United Arab Emirates—a honor bestowed upon creators and innovators who leave a sustainable impact on culture and arts.

Today, the works of Roya Rastegarsani shine in international exhibitions and are acquired within private art collections around the world. Roya lives and works in Vancouver, but her heart remains beating with the ancient Persian culture, which she transmits to the world with a modern vision and an unquenchable passion.

Her story is not just a personal success story, but an inspiring lesson for every creator seeking to weave their own path in life. It constantly reminds us that heritage is not merely folded pages in history books, but a renewed spirit vibrating with life whenever touched by the hand of an artist who loves beauty and seeks to spread hope and humanity in every corner of this world.
