The Journey of the Entrepreneur Essam Hashem… Who Transformed Crises into Opportunities... Dr. WEEE… From Waste to Sustainability.

Many have long believed that waste is merely a burden, but for entrepreneur Essam Hashem, this waste was a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Amidst the increasing environmental challenges in Egypt, an inspiring story emerged about the company Dr. WEEE, which not only transformed electronic waste into wealth but also redefined the concept of sustainability with a pure Egyptian vision.
Essam Hashem's journey began with the establishment of SpearInk, a company specializing in recycling printer cartridges. As the economic crisis intensified, he was forced to seek a new horizon, which led him to Dubai. There, he faced a shocking scene: workers sorting electronic waste in primitive ways that harmed the environment and public health, while valuable components, considered the foundation of advanced industries in other countries, were being wasted. This scene was not an obstacle; rather, it was the spark that ignited his determination to build a project that would address the problem scientifically and transform the crisis into an economic, social, and environmental opportunity.
Dr. WEEE was founded as the first integrated Egyptian entity to process electronic waste using the circular economy approach. The goal was not merely to collect used cartridges and refill them, but to design the necessary technology for this purpose and manufacture special machines for remanufacturing processes, turning the company into a driving force for industrial innovation in Egypt.
Dr. WEEE derives its strength from a solid vision, mission, and values that serve as its compass for achieving a positive impact on society and the environment.
Vision: To build a waste-free world by transforming every discarded item into a new, valuable resource.
Mission: To lead innovative solutions for electronic waste management and turn environmental challenges into economic and social opportunities.
Values: Innovation, Sustainability, Integrity, Collaboration, and Excellence.
These pillars were not just slogans; they were a practical compass that guided every decision, investment, and partnership.
Dr. WEEE was not just an electronic waste recycling (E-waste) project as its name suggests; it was a dream that transcended the limits of commercial profit to touch the core of sustainable development. The project was launched with a bold vision: not to limit its role to collecting and refilling used cartridges, but to design and manufacture the necessary technology for this process with trained Egyptian hands. This vision transformed the company from a simple recycling operation into a driving force for industrial innovation, as unique technical solutions and special machines for the remanufacturing process were developed.
The company's approach is based on the principle of reverse engineering, where every component of an ink cartridge is handled with utmost precision and scrutiny, not just to understand its components and function, but to develop a method for its efficient reuse. The process begins with collecting empty cartridges and storing them in special containers, then passing them through precise cleaning stages before entering the recycling phase and producing new ink of a quality that rivals imported ink.
After that, automated filling and packaging systems are used, ensuring consistent quality and high efficiency. This focus on minute details is what distinguishes Dr. WEEE's products and ensures their high quality, which has made Dr. WEEE's products capable of competing strongly in the local and regional markets.
Dr. WEEE is a comprehensive model for sustainability, where environmental benefits intersect with economic returns to form a complete success story.
Environmentally: Every remanufactured cartridge is a step toward protecting our planet. Recycling these cartridges significantly reduces electronic waste, limits pollution, and conserves valuable natural resources. The production of remanufactured inks consumes much less energy compared to the production of new inks, which contributes to lowering the carbon footprint.
Economically: Dr. WEEE was not just an environmental project; it was also a highly profitable one. The increasing demand for its products, the weak competition in this sector, and the ability to achieve significant profits made it a promising investment opportunity. Most importantly, the project creates jobs and employment opportunities, especially for small businesses in the field of cartridge refurbishment. It also provides an economic solution for institutions and companies, allowing them to save about 50% of the total cost of inks.
Dr. WEEE was not content with just providing a high-quality product; it considered itself a partner in building a culture of sustainability in Egyptian society. The company participated in awareness campaigns in major institutions such as the American International School, Hospital 57357, and the streets of Cairo, to raise awareness about the importance of recycling electronic waste.
The company also expanded its sphere of influence by participating in prestigious international and local conferences and exhibitions, such as the UN Environment Conference in Kenya 2016, RTM World Expo 2018, and Cairo Expo in 2008. These participations strengthened its position as a key player in the industry and provided it with the opportunity to exchange experiences with global partners, such as the Basel Convention.
The role of success partners in Egypt cannot be overlooked, including the Federation of Egyptian Industries (Environmental Compliance and Sustainable Development Office), the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, who provided the necessary support to make the initiative a success.
Dr. WEEE continues to expand its network, having established effective partnerships with entities in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Jordan, which confirms the quality and effectiveness of its product at a regional level. It has also provided its services to the largest institutions in Egypt, such as Orange, Arab Contractors, and the Armed Forces, which proves the market's trust in its products.
It has also forged strategic partnerships with Italy's Eco Avant-Garde and Canada's Chimican, which granted Essam Hashem the title of Regional Director of Sustainability Projects in the Middle East.
Dr. WEEE is not just a recycling company; it is an inspiring success story about creativity, will, and commitment. Essam Hashem proved that sustainability is not a burden but an opportunity for growth and innovation, and that from the heart of crises, the greatest opportunities can be born.
It is living proof that sustainability is not a burden but an opportunity for growth and innovation. By transforming used ink cartridges into a high-quality product that serves society, the environment, and the economy, Dr. WEEE has charted a new path for Egyptian companies and proved that true success lies in making a positive difference in people's lives and on our planet.
The story of Dr. WEEE is a testament that the Egyptian entrepreneur is capable of crafting a global model that balances profitability with the environment and places Egypt at the forefront of the circular economy scene.
